Amsterdam – Part 2 – Jakob Obrecht Straat

We continue on the Amsterdam chapter where Maron paints majestic pieces inspired by a cultural surrounding that is Amsterdam. Now they are living in Obrecht Straat in a beautiful place in the Gold Coast which is an great area in Amsterdam. I will show you his progression…

Painting flowers for my mother’s 60th birthday…beautiful piece just like her :)

There it is! so enchanting…you can see her can’t you? A picture of her taken in 1960…you can read his dedication on a note…my goodness this one is so good! I want it for me!

Here painting a still life which was commissioned and it’s Protagonist was Saint Aloysius…he  did not make an entrance yet but just wait…

I really like his extension, I know the way he holds his brush and the way his crooked pinky that he broke when young is ever so perfect for the task…my dad!

Ok ok let’s get back to it

Wow!

Right!… so gorgeous.

First of all, this stirs so many different things in me alone that I am not even sure which to address first…This like all their dwellings looks so comfortable to me, just so…them (us) and inspiring. I am sure they enjoyed those windows. I know they crave just this, a space for them to just create.

You can see the church is right outside his window. This painting is a master piece!

Obrecht Church. I recall seeing this place when I went for a walk with mom when visiting. So amazing and beautiful inside. The detail is just impeccable…

view from another side…look at this place! what I would give to find this kind of place here, ha!

Lovely interior of the opposite side…

Willy…

Oh this one! again, so good! note the light switch that I have used and still have, Do you see a young Maron boy in his favorite place…a small lagoon sized perfectly just for him. Willy sprinkled here and there…so cool.

The backyard at Obrecht…so beautiful!

Gorgeous portrait of Paxti

Self portrait…

Willy in Obrecht…love this one.

Yes, the nude…breathtaking isn’t it?

My dear friends…what can I say other that he has a talent that is truly given by a higher power and I am so lucky to be able to enjoy it up close. Keep posted as we near closer to today’s time and all the exciting new things that are happening! Sending much love to all you and thanking you a million times for reading and following. I know I don’t write as much as I should but I am here with you and when we touch base it is wonderful. Until next time!

Canary Islands to Amsterdam – New chapter in Sloten

I am now going to take you to the time span in which my parents moved from Canary Islands to Amsterdam. In essence from one homeland to the other and quite extreme in difference! They moved there in the middle of a heavy winter so it was a cold shock to him and I am sure it was because I remember visiting for the first time and when I got off the plane it was like I never knew what cold was before! My mother is dutch and so  this was very familiar to her. My father enjoyed very much being there as it is so rich in art culture. The museums and Dutch Masters impressed him very much. They first stayed with a friend Reine for a bit which was very nice; then they rented a place of a friend who was not there for about 6 months when they found another place in Sloten. This place was right in front of the river and it was very nice; I went to this place when I first visited them and took my then 1 year old daughter Alijah…it was so serene and nice to be there (of course anywhere with my parents is serene and nice ;)). They stayed there for another 6 months, in Amsterdam it is not easy to find a place that is permanent as they have a system in place for housing that can be time consuming and hard to get into. I want to show you some of the beauties he did there.

this he painted while staying with their friend Reineke

a painting of my mother

Here he is painting an interior of one of the beautiful places they stayed in Amsterdam

Finished interior

This painting of the Hortensias is so beautiful! I love it so much…the picture really does it no justice at all, so rich in color and vibrancy!

Birthday flowers for my mother as he always does for her :)

I actually have the top left one of the Japanese Garden in my room and I love it so much!

Here is one from the house they had by the river. This is the place where I visited with my then baby girl and it was lovely! You could walk out to the back patio and the river would be right there with plenty of ducks to feed.

This is a gorgeous still life; Catalog of Rijks Museum, with Adriaen Coorte on the cover.

Last but definitely not least a painting with a picture of my then baby Alijah, my music box and Maron’s reflection…This is mine as well and hangs in my living room…beautiful!

There is much more to tell my dear friends but I will keep it for the next chapter; until then be sure to check in with what is happening with my mother’s blog HERE!

Los Angeles – part 3 – Exhibition in Canary Islands…Maron’s homeland

MARON

English translation

Now in Los Angeles and it was 1995; I was to go do an exhibition in my native land in one of the most prestigious galleries of Canary Islands, in Galeria Saro Leon. For this I had to take the paintings (no easy feat) from Los Angeles to Canary Islands passing by Madrid, via New York. The subject for the exhibition was the series of rugs which I started painting in Paris and continued to do through the 80’s and part of the 90’s, that exhibition was the result. Although I painted many other paintings besides the rugs, these were part of the series of this subject. You could ask, why paint a rug on the floor and practically nothing else; and precisely it is to put them on the forefront and not in the background like decoration, relegated when in reality they have a lot to tell in the history of painting in general, not only in the Occidental art. Now I would like to narrate the story, I can assure you it truly was an adventure. When I went from Los Angeles to the middle of the Atlantic close the Saharan Coast, my beloved Canary land, I did not know nor did I ever speak with Saro Leon; I only had the recommendation of Quico Rivas, important exhibition organizer, who assured me that Saro was on board of the exhibition of the rugs. I tell this because other than myself no one knew anything, and no one would believe me if I told them; so I kept this project very discreet. Only after speaking with Saro, finalizing the date and starting preparations is when I brought those closest to me up to date. But before speaking with Saro 2 moths went by if intense suspense during which time I almost lost my mind, that story has been written in a book of all the diary style letters I wrote to Willy from Canary Islands; The book is called “Viaje a Canarias”

Thanks to Quico Rivas I could come to have an exhibition in my land, 30 years after New York and for me more important personally. Most of all for my already ill mother who I gave special honors before the doors opened to the public. I met Quico Rivas when in Madrid while going to the homage exhibit to Alberto Greco, who I met in Canary in ’64 when he was invited by Juan de Prat-Gay. Juan collaborated with Quico on that important exhibition presented in Argentina & Valencia before Madrid. Juan probably spoke favorably of me to him and at some point Willy invited Quico to come see my work, so he asked me to do a portrait of his girlfriend. Due to his health he went to stay in the island La Palma in Canary. That is how doing the exhibit in Canary Islands came about.

Now I want to briefly tell you about this specific piece which was to be the star of the exhibition and my father spent a year working on…”The Rapture”

this masterpiece never made it to its destination…yes you read correctly, it was stolen! somewhere between Los Angeles and Canary Islands it was taken…heartbreaking.

Aguas de Busot – Painting, shoes and travel

Now we are living in this amazing place called Aguas de Busot and there is a lot going on between mom’s shoe line and the shoe factory, several homes to care for and everything in between. Maron continues to paint although he also contributed a lot of time to the shoes and fashion world which Willy (mom) was part of. I want to share some photos of this time span which goes from Aguas de Busot to Elda which is the shoe making capital of Spain especially at this time but continues to carry that label today…here is Maron in Elda;

Joint in mouth and paintings in hand…typical dad in that time!

Now I share a painting out of the carpet series…”Beauty”

Here he is painting in Elda…

Love his T-shirt! and note the last supper behind him…this will come up later again ;)

I remember this house, 3 stories, tiled floors and almost every area had a different tile design. One thing I recall from this place is coming home one night and discovering that we had been robbed, house was all ransacked and it was such a violated feeling! I can only imagine what my parents felt like in that moment. Although we can be thankful the robbers had no taste or artistic clue since they only went for electronics and jewelry but left the most precious jewels there; the art!

Here is the “Lion Skin”

My goodness I remember this too…I wonder, was it real??

Here is the studio in Elda

This was in the 3 floor, all the way up along the roof patio where I had one of  my birthday parties…I always had amazing birthday parties!

Here is “the hanging Kilim

Here is “Paritura

Here is the “Used carpet”

So beautiful! Also do you see yet another tile flooring? :)

Now back to Aguas de Busot, so many fun memories here for me and my brother…playing in the vast country where there were no other people to really bother you and you could let your imagination soar like the wind!

You can see my brother and I, mom and dad, the beloved Land Rover…awwww

Here I will include the same link from my previous post which is a YouTube video about this place…if you look closely you can see the very house from the above picture…can you find it? So funny to me to see it this way…looks so different in a way but also just the same…wow!

Below a painting of the Sanitorium which is the big landmark of Aguas de Busot mentioned in the video as well

Here is a portrait of me by Maron in Aguas de Busot.

I have to admit I was not the easiest model to work with…but I love it, it is so gorgeous and I have it today hanging in the den.

Now back to Elda again and here he is painting

And back to Aguas to paint some more below

Here is the living room in Aguas de Busot below

More of him painting in Aguas…the 80’s

this painting below is done in Elda

Below a painting of the huge fireplace in Aguas de Busot…they would cook in there even! it was great

You could literally stand up and the top of it would be over your head!

And finally a look at Maron relaxing…doing what he really enjoys besides painting and writing which is playing the keyboard…he could and still can go on for hours playing and being as we say in Spain “en su salsa”!

Until next time my dear friends I leave you with this…to see what is happening on the other side with my mom and the shoes click HERE

El Nido del Aguila – El Cuarton – Africa’s view and the Carpets

This was a marvelous time, beautiful house or castle seen through my eyes…so much to venture and find in the gardens and so much to imagine for a young girl. I see such a big difference between the time I grew up and the times in which our children are growing up in now. I would stay outside all day and pretend 1000 & 1 scenarios and have the time of my life…at home today I almost have to force my kids to go outside and ride theirs bikes or just play! Well that is just the was it is I guess but I shall not give up…Times were much different too and Europe is also not the same as the US in many basic ways. Well the opening shot brought those thoughts to surface and a wishful dream that if only I could transport them to that time…that place…experience that childhood! wow ok ok, let’s get to the meat and potatoes here :) So we are in the South of Spain as you know and my father is painting non stop. He started a series of carpets during this time which is amazingly crafted along with his beautiful drawings that are always so lovely, I want to take you through a tour.

A painting of me by daddy

This is a drawing of the view of Africa from where we lived…so magical! By the way there is an amazing painting of this view that I shall share later ;) -Left-

I want to share with you a personal quote from my father that gives good insight into what an artist feels and is moved by in respect to his work and art in general.

“When it comes to speaking about painting, which happens to be the path I ventured to take, I feel unable to have an objective opinion that is not influenced by my personal experience. We could agree that painting today is very different than it was in the 14 century, and no doubt there is an evolution, with up and downs and good and bad artists, although compared to today they all seem better, and it looks like painting is on the road to extinction. The fact is that today, to be considered art, the emphasis is put on coming all the time with new and different ideas, and what in the past usually took centuries today happens in a year, like in fashion the hunger for novelty is insatiable. So it is no longer about painting but about ideas to satisfy the appetite of speculators. But that is the reality of the world and the artist depends of that too. First it was the Church and aristocracy, but bottom line is that the rich always promoted the artists,  and there is great competition as in any other business, with the risk of becoming commercial, etc. Modern art in the beginning seemed to be a remedy, but as it turned out the remedy is worse than the sickness. What is obvious to me is that the only way to go on painting is to be yourself. Of course that is not so simple as it sounds, whatever the style or form of expression, nothing is really new under the sun. Still we all have a different personality and so the chance to make a mark in the world is always there, I suggest to follow your instinct. I for example enjoy the company of the painting I happen to be doing, hoping to be a masterpiece, which brings an interesting question: what is a masterpiece? The answer is that only time can tell. As for what I like to paint I prefer to do it from what I see, especially something that has been painted before but I can re-vindicate. That is what motivated me to do  the series of the carpets, because although they are so classic they have always been neglected, put to the background, and I love to bring them to the front-stage. Another example is the Last Supper, which I did from a very popular and commercial item that everybody in Spain had at home, a metal bas-relief made from a former oil by an old master, Juan de Juanes. The arm of Jesus is from the actual relief I transplanted to the painting. In this case the circle is closed, from a painting to a bas-relief then back to a painting and bas-relief too. Let me now finish by saying that no matter what you do or try to say, the painting always has the last word, and the thing you cannot hide is the real intention of your work, so just be honest.”

This was important for you to read as we continue.

Here is The Last Supper masterpiece…this one is to my brother Alejandro what the Ham is to me

Below he is working on the Last Supper…You have to see it to truly understand…

Paris 4 – The jaw dropping “Les Toiles Caches” the ‘Hidden Canvas” series by Salvador Maron

My dearest friends, I open this post with a statement:

This is the most amazing collection of it’s kind in existance, hands down!

There are many I adore and am in awe about but I am going to share a series of paintings that are my very favorite and I have many favorite series so you are in for a treat!

Wow! the first Toile (cloth in French)

The Blue Knot. No no, take your time…take it in…

The Knot Knotted. Seriously!

The Knotted Knot. Oh my…

Mmmm Mmmm

Shut the door!

Magnificent!

Another… do you see what’s happening here?

What can I say… Adore it!

The Ripped Knot. I am becoming speechless…

Here is the Red Painting With Knot that you saw him working on the previous post :)

The Blue Stripes…BOOM!

Honestly what words could I possibly come up with that will describe them justly…This series was the true inspiration flourishing and taking shape. Translating through his eyes and fingers onto canvas he created not only a magnificent collection of detail and dimension but also brought a concept of genius to the game. Think about it, to refuse conforming to standard trends and going the unique route is what transcends here. He did not start off painting things that were common, he shows the beauty of what art really is. Now the paintings are ready and the challenge is to find the right gallery for the exhibition. I only wish I could have all of these pieces but nevertheless they are in good hands and the exclusive canvas prints will be available soon.

At the same time my mother is also creating incredible designs and together they embark on their life, always together and always creating…for her story CLICK HERE!

Willy and Salvador Canada

Maron goes to Canada – quiet before the storm, the artistic storm in Madrid.

We are taking you now to Canada, this is where they felt would be a good place to take some time for themselves and since my  mother was still recuperating from being sick in Singapore & her sisters were there it was the perfect time. Vancouver was the place and the details you can follow on my mother’s blog by clicking here.

Now I want to share an amazing collection of drawings of their time in Canada ending in their time in Madrid…please look at every drawing, it is so “far out”!

This next series is a sort of diary book of drawings that I really like because you can look at each drawing and see a tale, a “trip”, psychedelic times, funny ones and personal ones, all different in their own way and unique pieces all on their own…enjoy

Now we go to Madrid and you can see drawings of my father’s side of the family, I can see my Grandmother Margarita on the top 2, her face and her hand. Then you see my uncle Pedro in the next 2…then my Grandfather Salvador sleeping…a friend Jesus next to him and lastly my aunt Margarita…love them!

Once they are living in Madrid something remarcable happens…almost a decade before he had his things and art sent through a transport service to Madrid to an address which was without anyone to accept it so it was returned and the transport service only held things for a year but then years go by and now he is back hoping to find his treasures but not very optimistically. To his surprise when he walks into this office he sees his work framed and hung all over! It must have been such a feeling to walk in and see that what you made with your hands was so revered by another, they let him know that his things for the most part were kept safely by the Director of the Regional office because he LOVED the work so much…he kept it and took care of it very well actually, had drawings framed and hanging all over his office and was fervently letting him know that he had decided to keep them and appreciate them properly. So much so that he had to apologize for giving some drawings away as gifts to other regional managers in other countries and friends of his own. Well even though it hurts to not have all of your things it is such a cool thing in reality! so there they were and they were so loved that Maron let him keep some, the ones he knew he would not leave the man’s office with ha! The rest he took back home where they belonged so many years earlier.

Here are 2 of the surviving drawings he did in ’66 from that adventure

My brother, oil 1972

My Mother, oil.

Now I am going to show you a painting that is so amazing to me…this is a painting of the 3 of them but it is done from him looking at a Polaroid photo, this was sort of an “experiment” if you will…I mean if you think about it really, he did it just looking at a Polaroid photo! I know the original painting and it is of a nice size and the detail is crazy! ok here you go, enjoy

At this point he really wants to dive into painting, it is now March 1973 and they are feeling a Paris movement…Until we arrive there…

*Foot note: you can see all pictures in larger scale by clicking on them 2 times…trust me it’s worth it!

Salv in Singapore

Singapore – Salvador, Willy & Alejandrito continue

We are in the Tiger Balm Gardens in Singapore, Maron is walking with his young son who mirrors the woman in his life (my mother). This journey was full of beauty and inspiration. The East so romantically and culturally antiquated. So now it is the end of 1971 and while in Singapore they bring in the New Year for 1972 and there he did some beautiful drawings. In regards to the above picture of my father I can only think of how much I resemble him there! wow…Now let me share some drawings he did during this time

Willy, I love the look in her eyes on this one…she is so serious which is not what I am used to! it was rescued from a flood so it has even more character. Love it!

Willy with a more calm look in her eyes :) Amazing drawing…

Self portrait. This is such a good drawing I must say of himself which I find the most daunting challenge and yet he makes the best self portraits.

Willy doing something creative I am sure! love the colors on this…

The drawing above may very well be while she was very ill along with my brother due to eating some bad veggies…she turned yellow and felt terrible! poor mama. Drawing of Willy in India but so beautiful I am adding it!

Hmmm…sort of has an anime feel doesn’t it? love it!

Sexy! I know it is my mommy but I can recognize her sexy! :)

here is a drawing of their Spanish friend they happened to see on New Years eve by complete coincidence walking on the street, his name is Alfonso O’Lasso.

Now they are back in India and they met up with friend from Ibiza, above David Bushman. From here they went to London as they could only stay a few weeks due to how sick mom and Alejandrito got so they needed to recuperate…Now we go back to the Western world where I will take you along on the next chapter…stay tuned!

Salvador in Kashmir

Kashmir, India – Salvador Maron, drawings and more

They arrive in Delhi, India and start what you can call a pilgrimage…this was a very special trip for Maron in the sense of spirituality and self awareness, in that time it was still pretty untouched by the modern hands that now pollute it with the things that we see today. There was earthly beauty in this land and in a way they fit right in, in fact he was told many times that he looked Hindu so he was in his “sauce” as we say in Spain “en su salsa”. They found a beautiful house boat in Kashmir that they could live in and this was a wonderful time for them, the artist lovers and their son. My father did a lot of amazing drawings in this passage and I want to share them with you here…

2 Kashmiri women

Here he is drawing

Here is the book he was drawing…follow the story ;)

Here is a beautiful drawing of a man

Here you can see him with my brother, Alejandrito was his nickname…they are on their house house in the lake

Very nice drawing…

While in Kashmir their friend Alejandro arrived from Afganistan and they decided to go to Goa, which is South of Bombay. Once they arrived they found a beautiful house on the beach. At that time there was a war going on between India & Pakistan. But between Kashmir and Goa a year went by and since their Visa came to an expiring end it was time to move on…next stop Singapore.

Painting of oranges in progress..

Ibiza continues – Salvador & Willy living the life

So they have been living in Ibiza and now it was time to move on, make some money and be the nomads that they are…modeling jobs were not a problem for this couple and so they ventured out of Ibiza for a while leaving behind some treasures with friends to keep until their return. When I speak of treasures I mean all the beautiful things that they came to collect, from all their travels. I have always known them to have to most amazing things, not things that have names or brands and cost lots of money but the truly beautiful things that come to have meanings and stories behind them while possessing one of a kind beauty. So they leave to Marbella (Spain), Milan (Italy), all through those travels they did modeling jobs to make money and kept moving, the 2 lovebirds and the baby (my brother) here you can see a picture of one of their jobs while in Marbella… them along the beach holding my brother

After those travels they returned to Ibiza once more and stayed in an apartment for a short time. From this apartment you could see the sea really well and there was a rock which he drew from the balcony

Also he painted a beautiful piece “The Oranges” here in progress

Do you notice the trunk is on top of? this trunk was full of those treasures I mentioned before and while they left it to travel, after some time it never made it back to them :( so many beauties in there…Here is a picture of “The Oranges” today, owned by Micheline & Dominique Arnould

Now it was time to leave Ibiza and really start a new journey so off to Paris, once there they decided to buy their plane tickets to India which they had to buy it in Brussels and they drove in a Volkswagen beattle along with my God mother Cooky and her boyfriend at the time Pablo, somewhere along the drive they had a bad accident due to snow and ice on the road and the car turned a few times and caught on fire! they had a few thousand dollars in cash in the car.The money and Pablo were trapped in the car…it was time for action, and believe me my father never hesitated to jump in thick of it, so he rescues Pablo and saves his life and then saves the life of those few thousand dollars which was what they needed to buy those tickets! thankfully the money even though a bit burned was ok, it could be spent ;) This put Maron the artist and adventurer in a cast as he hurt his leg and broke his ankle. This obviously delayed the trip so once they got back to Paris he spent a lot of time at home. Where was their home you ask? well as usual they had an amazing place at the Place D’Iena, here is a current picture of what the place looks like

While at home he painted his self portrait…very good I might add!

Paris was the city of love and fashion but now it was time to move, see new things…So the 3 of them plan the next trip again, India! That is where we will travel next so stay tuned.
